What Makes a Battery Go Bad?

What makes a battery go bad?

  • Headlights or dome lights left on. Headlights, or even a very dim dome light, will drain a battery dead overnight.
  • Battery in weak or poor condition. A poorly maintained or weak battery may not hold a charge very well.
  • Corroded or loose battery connections. Loose battery connections can also cause problems.
  • Parasitic drains in the electrical system. Common drains include glove box and trunk lights that come on, or remain on, when they shouldn't.
  • Extremely hot or cold temperatures. Extremely hot or cold weather can also magnify other underlying issues.
  • Charging system problems. Loose or stretched belts and worn tensioners can prevent an alternator from working.

Batteries can last from a minimum of two years to as much as six, but the average is three to four years. Regular maintenance and testing of your battery is very important to maximize its life span. Feel free to ask Partner Tire to check your battery during a regularly scheduled vehicle maintenance appointment.
